Yoshi [to Thomas]: You won't be lost if you know that command, even if
everyone suddenly disappears somewhere.

Internet where students identify a problem, take actions to research and
solve this problem."
Frizzy [to Lavender [Guest]]: "We're getting there."
Yoshi [to Redford]: What's CR?
Colega has used it in the classroom.
Lavender [Guest] says, "We are using it at present with three teacher trainee

Gregor nods to Sunshadow.
Redford says, "Classroom"
Gregor is taking notes, BTW. :o)

Redford [to Colega]: Why not do a little demo
Thomas says, "How to deal with technophobia"
Frizzy [to Thomas]: "Good one."
Gregor says, "Good...good..."

people IRL and yelling at them.
Lavender [Guest] says, "How do we organize ourselve s so we talk so we vacan

Corwin says, "How about online teacher logs.."
Colega grins at Redford.
Mehitabel says, "May I ask a question?"
Gregor smiles at ines.
Colega [to Frizzy]: That is going to be the key... train the new teachers.
Frizzy thinks so too.
Colega listens to Mehi.
Yoshi is trying to organize a class on the net too and is interested in the
possibility of distand Ed. over the net.
Sunshadow agrees with Frizzy and Colega.
Mehitabel says, "How many people here are using a MOO client program?"
Green says, "Yeh teacher training"
Colega notes that it's hard to get the older, established teachers to use
the Internet.
Yoshi is.
Gregor [to Lavender [Guest]]: Since we're just brinstorming for now, let's
not worry about being too organized...you can get the transcripts of the
session later and reread in case you miss something.
Colega is using TinyFugue
Thomas says, "me!"
Green says, "I'm not "
Ron says, "I'm using TinyFugue. Finally!"
Colega can't imagine doing this without a client.
Frizzy grins at Ron.
Garfield says, "I am not"
Sunshadow says, "Not yet."
Lavender [Guest] says, "I'm lost. "We"we"If you want the older teachers
to use the Internet, then yuou have to give assignments using it, and

Green says, "It's OK"
Frizzy says, "Yes, a client is really important."
Yoshi agrees with Colega.

ines [Guest] smiles

lot to learn...
Gregor says, "So what about a sesion here to discuss assignements to use
in MOO, on the WEB, using email..."

Thomas says, "They put all the same software on all machines"
ines [Guest] says, "I'm looking for a good MOO client..."
Redford wants to see conversation classes on line
Gregor says, "One idea I have had is more MOO instructions sessions....MOO
101, 202, etc."
Corwin nods Redford "me too"
Colega agrees with Gregor and Redford.
Lavender [Guest] says, "If we're talking about the time, it's 5:35 pm in
Israell."
Frizzy advises those approaching schools about storing clients on the server
to use published material like my thesis to demonstrate the educational uses
of MOO.
Colega wants to know if people really do learn language via MOO.
Gregor [to Colega]: So are you suggesting a session on approaches to research?
ines [Guest] agrees with Gregor.
Frizzy likes that idea too.
Green says, "Has anyone been on a MUD in a foreign language?"
Frizzy has.
Guilson has
Colega notes we need research and/or papers like Frizzy's to help us talk
about al this with the uninitiated.
Thomas has
Corwin has been previewing a book that desribes research for synchronous
environments such as Daedalus for foreign language learning
Green says, "Daedalus?"
Gregor says, "Let's stop for just a second to reorganize...I think we're

Green sits down at Wading
Green sits down at Wading Pool
Garfield gathers everybody around for a group hug!
Green says, "Is the MOO thesis available?"
Guilson [to Gregor]: Do I need to use a specific command for that?
Guilson sits down at Wading Pool. . .
Sunshadow sits down at Kitchen Table
Mehitabel sits down at Kitchen Table. . .
Gregor says, "I've asked some helpers to page you to have you join a table.
From the tables, you can talk in small groups."
Lavender [Guest] says, "Thomas, is your thesis on line?"

Guilson . o O ( cool! )
Green says, "have we diided off into a smal group?"
Lavender [Guest] says, "Thomas, is there anyway we can see your thesis or

ines [Guest] says, "Where should I go?"
Lavender [Guest] says, "What's happening. Who else is in the kitchen?"
Lavender [Guest] says, "I did. and nothing happened."
Gregor says, "OK, so the topic for discussion: PLease continue talking
about future topics. Also, talk about the dynamic of these sessions: How

Ron speaks up, ""I am having trouble rounding up Garfield and Lavender."
Corwin speaks up, "Lavender, kitchen is a table, type sit kitchen"
Lavender [Guest] says, "SIT KITXCHEN"

Sunshadow sits down at Wading Pool. . .
Yoshi, Green, Colega, and Thomas at the Fireside Bearskin (thanks to

Yoshi sits down at Fireside Bearskin. . . Colega sits down at Fireside Bearskin. . . Green sits down at Fireside Bearskin. . . Green [to this group]: There's just the right aamount of chaos. Colega grins Green [to this group]: Gregor is doing a good job Thomas [to this group]: how come we can see everyone chatting Yoshi [to this group]: We all hear those who's standing and speaking while we're sitting. Thomas [to this group]: No I mean we should just hear us right Green [to this group]: We can hear the people who are standing Green [to this group]: But we can't hear the people like Frizzy and Ron who are sitting at other tables Colega [to this group]: This is the classroom type room. If you type @exam here, you see all sorts of cool commands. Thomas [to this group]: I see, but I don't no why Yoshi [to this group]: That's the feature of this conference room. We usually have only one speaker standing up and speaking. Colega [to this group]: Is all of this being logged, at each table? Thomas [to this group]: oh got it Green [to this group]: I wonder Thomas [to this group]: Ok, well let's continue Sunshadow [to Yoshi]: Hi, Yoshi. Green [to this group]: Are Yoshi [to this group]: And one can always talk to the whole audience by 'su' command, which is 'speak up'. Thomas [to this group]: Are? Thomas [to Yoshi]: thanks Green [to this group]: Sorry Green [to this group]: Are any of you using MOOs? Thomas [to this group]: Well, I wrote my thesis on I-net uses for ESL Colega wonders if she is lagged. Yoshi [to Green]: We all are right now;) Green Yeh but to teach with Green [to this group]: Sorry Yoshi [to this group]: Seriously, I'm organizing a online class using e-mail/schMOOze. Green [to this group]: Yeh but to teach with Thomas [to this group]: But I have never been able use the I-net in teaching so far. Yoshi [to this group]: at Frizzy's University Network. I was hired for no salary there. Green [to this group]: I'm not Gregor sits down at Fireside Bearskin. . . Green [to this group]: I think it would be pretty daunting for my students Yoshi [to this group]: Also, my students have been doing e-mail exchange with students from various places too these two years. Thomas [to this group]: YEs, in distance learning, I think it is easier to use. Yoshi [to Green]: Well, it depends. Green [to this group]: Distence learning Green [to this group]: Question mark Thomas [to Yoshi]: that is progressive Green [to this group]: Bye colega Thomas [to Green]: DS is teaching from a distance Mr.C has arrived. Green [to this group]: I want to tryMUD games in Korean Green [to this group]: But I think it will be pretty difficult Thomas [to this group]: At the two Colleges I have taught at, students have to pay $ to use the I-net Yoshi [to Green]: How's the situation at your school about network/computer? Gregor [to this group]: Thomas, do you think student access would be a good neteach discussion topic? Green [to this group]: I'm not teaching with the Net Thomas [to this group]: Yes Green [to this group]: I'm on a commercial provider Yoshi [to Green]: I see. Gregor [to this group]: Green, do your students have any access? Thomas [to this group]: If they have to pay, they might not want to use it Redford has to make like a banana and split Green [to this group]: Tell us more YOshi about your situation Redford says, "Catch you all later" Frizzy speaks up, ""Bye Redford!"" Yoshi [to this group]: By the way, when you want to talk to a particular person, type: toCorwin speaks up, "bye redford" Redford says, "Bye all" Yoshi [to this group]: It might cause less confusion that way. Redford has disconnected. Gregor [to this group]: Green, maybe we could save that...I'd really like to try to get a good list of FUTURE topics for us to discuss in these sessions.... Yoshi speaks up, "See ya, Redford." Ron speaks up, "Bye Redford." Gregor [to this group]: Yoshi, the problem is that then other tables hear you. Colega has connected. Gregor [to this group]: Let's try to make a good list of future topics to discuss...we're running out of time here. Colega sits down at Fireside Bearskin. . . Yoshi [to Gregor]: Oh, do they?? Shoot, I should have known that earlier. Gregor [to this group]: I'm going to move on to another table. Gregor stands up from Fireside Bearskin. . .
Frizzy, Sunshadow, Mr.C, and Ines at the Wading Pool (thanks to Frizzy)
Frizzy [to this group]: Hi! Now we're all here! Frizzy [to this group]: Let's talk a bit about good topics to discuss during these sessions. Frizzy [to Sunshadow]: "What are some of your interests, related to NETEACH?" Frizzy [to ines [Guest]]: "How about you? Any ideas?" Sunshadow [to Frizzy]: I'm interested in using the Net for ESL students to do real-life projects where they identify a problem, research it and take some relevant action. Sunshadow lags Frizzy [to this group]: By relevant action, do you mean in their community or something like that? ines [Guest] is not quite sure about the emote command Sunshadow [to this group]: " Yes, but it could be national or global. Just that they USE the language and not just write a paper Frizzy [to ines [Guest]]: "That was perfect. :)" Mr.C sits down at Wading Pool. . . Mr.C [to Frizzy]: Hi... Frizzy [to Sunshadow]: "Have you seen the book _Virtual Connections_? There are lots of project ideas in there." Frizzy welcomes Mr.C and introduces him to ines, Sunshadow and guilson. Redford has to make like a banana and split Redford says, "Catch you all later" Sunshadow [to Frizzy]: Yes, I've seen the book and some of those projects were good, but few were appropriate for an adult ed population. You speak up, ""Bye Redford!"" Mr.C [to this group]: Sorry I'm late (and wet)... if anyone needs projects... my d-base of k-12 projects covers the past six months and 20 listservs. Corwin speaks up, "bye redford" Redford says, "Bye all" Ron smiles mischievously to show Lavender [Guest] his white teeth. Redford has disconnected. Frizzy [to Mr.C]: "We're just getting started here, brainstorming topics for future discussion at these sessions." Mr.C [to Frizzy]: Unfortunately... I'm still at home... and have to leave for school soon... I will reconnect as soon as I can. Frizzy nods to Mr.C. ines [Guest] [to this group]: I would like to hear about people's experience in using MOOs in claass ines [Guest] says hi to Mr.C Frizzy [to ines [Guest]]: "That's a great idea. I'm interested in that too!" Frizzy has used MOO for student-teacher conferences. Gregor sits down at Wading Pool. . . Gregor [to this group]: How are we doing here? Frizzy smiles at Gregor. Mr.C [to Gregor]: A little wet... and later for school! Mr.C says in his best Arnie voice" I'll be back! Frizzy [to this group]: We've come up with: Global online projects for Adult Ed & uses of MOO in the classroom for future topics. Gregor [to this group]: I am seeing that people are already wanting to start discussing things NOW...but since we're almost out of time, let's make sure we come up with a good list of future topics to discuss. Mr.C has disconnected. Sunshadow [to this group]: Teacher training is a really big one for me too. Frizzy agrees. Gregor [to this group]: Sunshadow, you mean "How to?" Frizzy [to this group]: How to train teachers. Frizzy [to this group]: *What* to train teachers. Gregor [to this group]: ...or maybe "issues related to"...I'm dealing with that now...how to get admin. support for training. Sunshadow [to this group]: Well, there seems to be a lot of resistance to using the Internet. Few teachers see it as really useful in promoting language ability. Gregor [to this group]: So, how to convince teachers of the worth is another issue. Frizzy thinks we could cover (in our MOO sessions) teacher training for classroom use and for professional development. Gregor [to this group]: This group seems to be on the right track...I'm going to slide over to the next group to see how they're doing. Gregor stands up from Wading Pool. . . Sunshadow [to this group]: My experience in teacher training is that they see the value for professional training, but it means more work without pay to overcome the never ending learning curve. ines [Guest] agrees with Frizzy Frizzy [to this group]: Well, these are all things we can bring up during a session on teacher training, right? Frizzy thinks it'll be a goody! Sunshadow [to this group]: Sure. Sounds good. Frizzy [to ines [Guest]]: "do you have any other suggestions besides classroom applications of MOO?" Mr.C stands up from Wading Pool. . .
Ron, Guilson, Mehi, Corwin at the Kitchen Table (thanks to
Ron)
Ron [to this group]: How many are here at the kithen table. Guilson . o O ( cool! ) Ron [to this group]: When seated at one of the tables we can only hear others at the table. Mehitabel [to this group]: I guesss it is just the two of us. Corwin sits down at Kitchen Table. . . Ron [to this group]: Hi Corwin. Mehitabel [to this group]: I have to get ready for class soon. Corwin [to this group]: Hi Mehitabel [to this group]: We are sitting at the kitchen table. Ron speask up, ""I am having trouble rounding up Garfield and Lavender." Corwin speaks up, "Lavender, kitchen is a table, type sit kitchen" Lavender [Guest] sits down at Kitchen Table. . . Ron [to this group]: Way to go Lavender. Lavender [Guest] [to this group]: it took a while but I finally got it.... Garfield sits down at Kitchen Table. . . Corwin [to this group]: well done! Ron [to this group]: It looks like everyone but Garfield is here. Mehitabel pours Lavendar a cup of coffee. Corwin [to this group]: we're all here Mehitabel [to this group]: Garfield is not a teacher. Ron speaks up, "Garfield Please join us at the kitchen table." Lavender [Guest] [to this group]: I hate to be dumb beut where is this kitchen - it's not on the amp. Lavender [Guest] [to this group]: Thanks for the coffee. Mehitabel [to this group]: This is a kitchen table. Ron [to this group]: Okay group. In this small group it should be easier to converse. Ron [to this group]: Gregor would like us to brainstorm ideas for Neteach MOO sessions. Lavender [Guest] [to this group]: First of all to figure outa way that people can talk to each other , listen to each other and catrry on a converasatin. Mehitabel [to this group]: Lavendar, what would youlike to discuss at the next meeting? Lavender [Guest] [to this group]: The idea of talking about what can be done with a MOO is a good one. Mehitabel [to this group]: One thing I have done is have students come here and interiview specific people on a specific subject. Mehitabel [to this group]: And then write about it. Lavender [Guest] [to this group]: Do you have the students go to a specific place to "be alone." Ron [to this group]: I need to become familiar with getting names for students and finding ways to introduce them to Schmooze. Mehitabel [to this group]: Most people here have their own rooms. Lavender [Guest] [to this group]: What does that mean - they have their own rooms? Mehitabel [to this group]: There is a dormitory here. Ron [to this group]: You can request your own room in Schmooze. Mehitabel [to this group]: Like real life. Ron [to this group]: This room can be our home, e.g. a dorm room. Lavender [Guest] [to this group]: How do you request your own room? Mehitabel [to this group]: First you must become a regular character. Lavender [Guest] [to this group]: How do you become a regular character? Mehitabel [to this group]: Then you send mail to the dorm authority (Gregor). Mehitabel [to this group]: There is a classroom here with instructions. Ron [to Mehitabel]: Is there anyway to download Schmooze instructions? Mehitabel [to this group]: It also teaches all the commands. Corwin [to this group]: Ron, try http://schmooze.hunter.cuny.edu/ Lavender [Guest] [to this group]: What do you write to the dorm authority? What is it your request? Mehitabel [to this group]: You forgot the 8888. Mehitabel [to this group]: You request a room. Corwin [to this group]: Ron, try http://schmooze.hunter.cuny.edu:888/ ...thanks, mehi Ron [to this group]: Thanks all. Mehitabel [to this group]: Lavender, is this your first time here? Ron [to this group]: We have had a lot of conversation this morning. Some digesting will be helpful. Ron [to Lavender [Guest]]: Do you have another question? Lavender [Guest] [to this group]: Yes this sort of my first time. I visited before but was very confused. Now I'm only confused without the very. Mehitabel [to this group]: Is the text running together for you? Ron [to Lavender [Guest]]: The first reaction to MOOs is usually one of confusion. Ron never thought he would feel comfortable MOOing, but is learning. Lavender [Guest] [to this group]: I don't feel bad. I'm game for another try, and like a good puil, I;ll get on diuring the week.. Mehitabel [to this group]: Lavender, what levels do you teach? Lavender [Guest] [to this group]: I teach teacher trainees and teacher trainers. Mehitabel [to this group]: Then you are the perfect person to be here. Ron [to this group]: Remember we are neteachers and we need not limit ourselves to talking about MOOs. Lavender [Guest] [to this group]: Thank you. Why is that? Corwin [to Lavender [Guest]]: I used to do this too.. miss it. Ron [to this group]: Would it be helpful to talk about what we are doing with computers and teaching/learning? Lavender [Guest] [to this group]: to Corwin. What do you do now? Corwin [to Lavender [Guest]]: Teach students only Mehitabel [to this group]: Lavendar, you are the person who will introduce the others to the net. Corwin [to Ron]: are you asking about topics or future MOO sessions? Corwin [to Ron]: for Lavender [Guest] [to this group]: TRhat's exactly what I've been doing in the past year. - working mainly with teacher trainers and seeing what we can do i the teacher training seminars to get things moving. Corwin thinks Lavender's job is key Ron [to this group]: Yes, topics for future sessions aren't limited to MOOs. Ron's lagging. Mehitabel [to this group]: How is your net connectivity in Israel? Lavender [Guest] [to this group]: We're in pretty good shape. Most of the teacher training seminars are on-line and the schools are beginning. In some cases, there may be only one connection in the school but the teachers can work on e-mail projects. Mehitabel [to this group]: We haven't had many people/students from Israel here. Lavender [Guest] [to this group]: Where is here? Mehitabel [to this group]: Schmooze. Gregor sits down at Kitchen Table. . . Gregor [to this group]: How are we doing here, gang? Ron [to this group]: Fine, Greggie. Lavender [Guest] [to this group]: Well our classes will be coming in a few weeks when we do our lesson. But don't forget that the time difference is pretty great - 7 hours to the East Coiast and 10 to the West so the chances of meeting each other are pretty slim. Ron [to this group]: Okay, Corwin. Mehitabel [to this group]: I am usually on at night. Ron [to this group]: IF we finish in the next ten minutes, I can finish logging. Mehitabel [to this group]: However, I have a class in a very few minutes and am not even dressed. Gregor nods. "I'll draw this to a close." Gregor stands up from Kitchen Table. . . Lavender [Guest] [to this group]: Your night is our late afternoon when most people are not on-line for free (like I'm ni\ not now. Corwin chuckles Mehitabel [to this group]: It is nice seeing you all. Ron [to this group]: Thanks for joining us at the kitchen table.
Gregor says, "Folks! We're about out of time...people have to go teach, or go to bed, or whatever..." Mehitabel stands up from Kitchen Table. . . Sunshadow stands up from Wading Pool. . . Gregor says, "So I'd like to thank you all for coming. I think this is not a bad start. We'll get some momentum going with it as we go along." Ron stands up from Kitchen Table. . . Lavender [Guest] has disconnected. Gregor says, "Check the web page for a log of this session....you have to read pretty fast to keep up in these things!" Corwin stands up from Kitchen Table. . . Sunshadow cheers for the NETEACH and schMOOze staff!
