walls are primed with white paint and are bare, except for one light switch.
You see Teacher's Desk, Big Table, Bulletin Board, Beanbags, Fireside
Bearskin, Kitchen Table, and Wading Pool.
You see Yoshi, smoody [Guest], thinking, and Frizzy standing about.
You see LCD Panel.
Obvious exits: out

smoody [Guest] says, "How do you do a GROUP HUG?"
Frizzy thinks smoody just did one! *hee hee*
Gregor grins and waves to lots of Sus***'s, a Friz, and a Japanese guy! ;o)
Gregor [to smoody [Guest]]: Like this:
Gregor tackles everyone in the room in a mighty group hug!
Ron is going to try to join you.
Yoshi bows to Mr. Gregor gracefully.
Ron has arrived.
smoody [Guest] says, "hello Ron"
Gregor says, "Howdy, Ron!"
Frizzy giggles cuz she's ticklish.
Ron says, "Hi folks."
thinking says, "hi ron"
Frizzy hugs Pa.
Gregor's tickled cuz Frizzy's gigglish.
Frizzy snorts and guffaws.
Gregor chortles and yuks.
Ron hugs Frizzy with a warm and loving embrace.
Ron says, "Hi Yoshi."
Frizzy notes that she left Corwin at the entrance gates to help newbies.
Yoshi says, "Hi Ron."
Ron says, "Hi thinking."
Gregor says, "ooo, cool, someone from Greece logged in!"
Frizzy says, "Wow!"
Gregor says, "Hi! Who's here?"
thinking says, "I'm here :-)"
smoody [Guest] says, "Smoody's here. "
puzzled [Guest] slides in, ready to NETwork.
thinking says, "thinks that is not what gregor wanted."
Ron says, "Hi Mehi>"
puzzled [Guest] says, "hi everyone, am I late or early?"
Gregor says, "Hi, puzzled!"
Ron says, "Hi Corwin. You're looking caffienated."
Gregor [to puzzled [Guest]]: You're right on time!
thinking [to puzzled [Guest]]: neither
Frizzy [to puzzled [Guest]]: "You're right on time. :)"
Gregor lags a bit.
Yoshi [to puzzled [Guest]]: No, you're not;)
Frizzy nudges Gregor.
smoody [Guest] says, "Will we know when the meeting has started?"
Frizzy grins.
Gregor says, "OK, we'll wait a few more minutes for people to log in. Anyone need
coffee? A beer?"
Ron says, "Hi, Susan!"
Frizzy [to smoody [Guest]]: "Yes, Czar Gregor will lead the way."
smoody [Guest] [to Ron]: "Are Gregor saysing hi to me?
puzzled [Guest] [to Corwin]: Hi from Greece
Gregor says, "We're well-stocked with Susans today."
thinking [to Ron]: wonders which susan he means....
Frizzy [to puzzled [Guest]]: "It's nice to have the Greek ambassador for
NETEACH here today. :)"
Ron says, "The time in Richmond, Virginia, USA is now 8:01 p.m. on Wednesday"
thinking keeps on lagging.
Frizzy detects a slight, yet annoying, lag. :P
Yoshi feels some lag on his side, but he thinks it's from the net.
Gregor thinks lag is a bad idea right now.
Ron says, "Whoa! I'm lagging."
Gregor thinks lag is a REALLY bad idea right now.
Gregor reminds people that lag is nothing to panic about.
Yoshi says, "We didn't talk about the lag last time, did we?"
thinking thinks she stoped lagging.

you.."
Ron says, "hi archy!"
Gregor waves to archy.
Yoshi [to Gregor]: Shall we fload Frizzy with page messages now?
archy thinks the room looks kinda crowded, and hopes folks watch thier steps,
as to not step on life forms smaller than thenselves
Gregor [to Frizzy]: Are you getting paged?
Frizzy hasn't seen a page yet. :(
Frizzy has seen many now. :)

Ron is amazed at the turnout tonight.
puzzled [Guest] doesn't emote one bit
Gregor points out that emoting is a good deal of the fun of MOOing. :o)
Frizzy really *does* think Smashing Pumpkins rule!
Yoshi laughs, "You are, puzzled!"
Gregor does an impressive cartwheel.
Green slides in, ready to NETwork.
Ron nods.
Ron grins.

Gregor says, "This can be useful for finding the exit and finding out who's with
you."
smoody [Guest] says, "Nice room!"
thinking says, "I Have a question"
Gregor [to thinking]: Yes>?
thinking says, "When I type Lfrizzy I don't see her description"
puzzled [Guest] says, "bearskin? I like bears"
thinking says, "you said i could type l"
Frizzy grins at puzzled.
Mehitabel says, "You need a space."
thinking [to Mehitabel]: thank you very much
Gregor [to thinking]: You need to put a space in between L and Friz
Frizzy [to Frizzy]: "it's all fake fur 'round here."
Corwin [to thinking]: you need a space i.e. l frizzy
thinking notes this in her notebook
thinking scratches away

look
Ron, Truna, Corwin, Yoshi, and puzzled at the Beanbags
Ron waves at Gregor. Truna [to Ron]: I'm on a dodgy old machine..can you do it? Gregor [to this group]: Hi, folks. Ron [to this group]: I can log this session. Truna [to Gregor]: Shuffle and it's very comfy here Gregor enables emoting from seats to whole room... thinking emotes to the room Gregor disables emoting from seats to whole room... Gregor giggles., Truna [to this group]: aww Ron [to this group]: What is our topic, again? Corwin [to Ron]: That's our topic. :) Gregor [to this group]: Hee hee! OK, tht topic is, what would you like to see as topics in the future here at the neteach moo sessions? Ron makes a list. Truna [to Ron]: we've been introducing students to MOOing here and are wondering where to take them next Ron [to this group]: Using email in the classroom. Corwin takes another swig of caffeine to fire up his brain Gregor [to this group]: ONe thing I mentioned last week that would be very useful is MOO 101, 202, etc. We could do some more advanced tutorials here for teachers who want to know how to do more. Truna nips into her own kitchen to get coffee BRB Yoshi [to this group]: Shoot, I've been bugging by a RL call:( Ron wonders what an RL call, Ah...real life! puzzled [Guest] wonders how long since he last sat on a bean bag Gregor [to this group]: Truna, what types of activities have you already done? Ron [to this group]: Our topics are not limited to MOOs. Corwin has a couple of ideas Gregor [to this group]: Take it away, Corwin. Corwin [to this group]: inetgrated internet course... MOO email etc.. ir totally online for speaking and listening.. Truna [to this group]: We have integrated MOOing into coursework - you know adjective work then entering descriptions and stuff Corwin [to this group]: a collaborative venture.. of people here Gregor [to this group]: Corwin, so you'd like to have us all brainstorm here about how to create an entire net-focused ESOL course? Truna [to Corwin]: 'sounds good Corwin [to this group]: yeah Corwin [to this group]: and at the same time.. Ron would like narrower topics. Gregor [to this group]: I think this is a really good medium for us to collaborate in, too..all our brainstorming is recorded and ready to be manipulated. Truna [to Ron]: how do you mean? Ron [to Truna]: Well, planning a course on a MOO with a group sounds pretty daunting to me. Corwin [to this group]: ...we keep electronic reflective logs .. for our own teacher development.. double edged focus Corwin [to this group]: Oops rl phone Gregor snickers. Truna [to Ron]: Do you mean a groupf students or a group of teachers? Ron [to this group]: Something like word processing tricks would be interesting. Gregor [to this group]: (just when he was getting good! ;o)) Ron [to Truna]: I'm talking about the topics for our Neteach MOO sessions. Truna is laughing so much that her coffeee is spilling on the keys Yoshi [to this group]: Whew, finally got rid of the call! Yoshi catches up... Truna welcomes Yoshii back Ron's real life phone can't ring when he is logged on. Gregor [to this group]: Ron, that brings up a good point.. Ron [to Gregor]: What? Gregor [to this group]: neteach-l is focused on just the net. Would you like to see our sessions here expanded to other CALL topics? Yoshi smiles at Truna. Gregor [to this group]: WP tricks are something I'm VERY interested in discussing. Is this the forum? Should it be? Could it be? Ron [to Gregor]: Word processing can be networked. Gregor [to this group]: Good point. Yoshi [to this group]: Why not HTML? Truna thinks that teaching is teaching and so the Net, the keyboard are all part of it! Ron's students use WordPerfect for UNix to write. Gregor [to this group]: Let me restate the question then, WP tricks aside. Should these sessions include non-net CALL topics? Ron [to Yoshi]: What can we discuss about HTML? Yoshi [to this group]: If you stick to a particular software, the use of the docs will be limited too. Truna [to Gregor]: I think the WOp is part of using the net - our students use WP to prepare room descriptions... Yoshi [to this group]: How about the possibility of HTML for collabrative use or activities? Gregor [to this group]: I think Ron meant word processing, even though it might have looked like WordPerfect... Ron [to this group]: Maybe we could take turns coming up with topics. Truna [to this group]: sorry WP...where is my delete key!!! Gregor [to this group]: Naw, we're brainstorming! Blurt away, everyoe Yoshi coughs. Ron [to Yoshi]: I was just pointing out that wp software can be networked. Yoshi [to this group]: Yes, only among the same type of software, true. Ron [to this group]: How about computer orientation. How do you bring students along to network use? puzzled [Guest] [to this group]: My major problem is persuading managers that netuse is a worthwhile investment Gregor [to this group]: That's a good one, Ron. I have some ideas about that that I would love to bounce off all of you. Truna [to Ron]: We are having real problems with that one Truna [to Gregor]: Bounce away Gregor [to this group]: Puzzled, that sounds like an important point. Yoshi [to this group]: Here in Japan, the keyboard skill is the major problem when we try to bring students to computers. Ron [to this group]: What about management in the computer-connected classroom. Gregor [to this group]: Well, Truna, I'd rather set it as a future topic and spend the rest of our time here brainstorming. Let's get a good set of ideas for future discussions, and come back in a week or so to really hammer them out! Ron [to Yoshi]: Keyboarding, as in training, would be a good topic. Truna [to this group]: the nightmare of key stroke commands and passwords! Yoshi [to this group]: That's a very important one too, Ron. I'm having a very difficult time doing it now. Ron is a keyboard klutz. Corwin returns Yoshi [to this group]: Tips and trick for lab managing. Gregor notes that his typing skills have increased astronomically since he began MOOing. "It scares my students when they see me type! ;o)" Yoshi [to this group]: Welcome back, Corwin. Corwin [to this group]: sorry I don't know what's gone before but... Ron [to Yoshi]: Good one! Truna [to this group]: I am having problems with theachers - convincing them that the work of getting students into the net is worth it! Corwin nods truna Yoshi [to this group]: Isn't it because of your fearful look when you moo, Gregor?? Gregor nods loudly to Truna. Ron [to this group]: Here is a tough one -- evidence that working on the net helps. Corwin [to this group]: did anyone mention.. Yoshi [to this group]: Yeah, Truna. Gregor [to this group]: FearSOME, Yoshi! ;o) Gregor snickers. Yoshi [to this group]: Oh, only -some? Yoshi laughs. Ron laughs out loud! Truna [to this group]: A major problem can be that the students pick up the commands faster than their teachers.... Ron is practice using verb features. Corwin [to this group]: ... defveloping a course to bring students (and teachers) up to internet speed? prior to online course delivery. Gregor [to this group]: Wow, Truna. That sounds like a good one to bring up as a lab management topic, eh? Truna nods and dissappears to deal with an errant child Ron [to this group]: Makes for good assistants. Truna nods and dssappears to deal with an errant chilsd Yoshi [to this group]: What do you mean internet speed? Ron [to this group]: That is students who pick up the keystrokes faster than the teacher. Gregor [to this group]: Up to speed....idiom for "to full competence". Yoshi [to this group]: Thanks, Gregor. Corwin [to this group]: I mean that using the net, whether as a whole course or integrated into an existing c/r based course, requires a set of skills needed prior to the ESL/EFL instuctoin Yoshi is still trying to learn Engilsh:p Ron [to this group]: How about deliverying materials via the Web, etc. Gregor [to this group]: Time for a little group management...
Gregor stands up from Beanbags. . . Gregor says, "Folks, we've been going for an hour here...I'm having fun, though. Shall we continue?" Gregor says, "or take a break and say goodbye to those who must go teach or make dinner or get to bed or....?" Ron says, "The time in Richmond, Virginia, USA is now 9:03 p.m. on Wednesday" Corwin says, "The time in Hong Kong is now 9:03 a.m. on Thursday" Gregor reminds eveyone that he can't hear their replies if they are using the " command... Frizzy speaks up, ""We're staying put for a while. :)"" Gregor says, "Type SPEAKUPor just SU to address the whole room..." Corwin speaks up, "a bit longer maybe" Gregor grins. "Great! Glad to hear it." Ron speaks up, ""Howdy in the wading pool."
Frizzy, thinking, Mehitabel, and smoody at the Wading Pool
Frizzy sits down at Wading Pool. . . thinking doesn't know how to sit down Mehitabel sits down at Wading Pool. . . Frizzy rolls out a yellow carpet to welcome Mehitabel. Frizzy [to this group]: The others should be here soon. :) Gregor says, "You type SITto sit down. Just type the first part of the name, as in, fireside or wading" Gregor says, "or beanbags" Gregor grins. thinking sits down at Wading Pool. . . thinking notes it is 95 here in California today. smoody [Guest] sits down at Wading Pool. . . thinking needs the wading pool Frizzy notes it is 95 in *southern* california. :) smoody [Guest] [to Frizzy]: "Am I supposed to be in the pool? thinking stands corrected and bows to frizzy Frizzy [to smoody [Guest]]: "You *are* in the pool!" Mehitabel [to this group]: It's just a name. Gregor says, "Now, when you talk using the " command, only people at your "table" will hear you." Frizzy splashes smoody to confirm. Gregor says, "YOu can all hear me cuz I'm the teacher, and I'm standing up." smoody [Guest] [to this group]: Awwww. Now my hair's wet. thinking hands smoody a dryer Frizzy [to this group]: Don't electrocute yourself! Gregor revels in the power. Gregor is going to display something new on the screen... On the screen you see... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let's begin our discussion of possible future topics for our MOO sessions. After the our discussion, you can make arrangements with any of the MOOtors to meet again for further instruction. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- smoody [Guest] [to Frizzy]: and thinking "Thanks. thinking [to Frizzy]: it is a solar dryer Frizzy grins. Frizzy . o O ( thinking is so smart! ) thinking bows Frizzy [to this group]: Okay, I think thinking had a suggestion earlier for a discussion topic. thinking [to this group]: yes .......what was it...I forgot :-0 thinking [to this group]: ho people got access. Frizzy [to thinking]: "About access?' thinking [to this group]: Ho=how thinking [to this group]: Ok so what other ideas? Frizzy [to this group]: I think access is a big concern in many situations. That's a good one. Any other discussion topics? smoody [Guest] [to this group]: are both of you at universities which provide access? thinking [to this group]: I am at a community college thinking [to this group]: no access Mehitabel's school access. Frizzy too, but the access is very limited, especially for Ss. Mehitabel [to this group]: er, has. smoody [Guest] [to this group]: that would be a good topic. Frizzy agrees. thinking [to this group]: ok what other topics... thinking [to this group]: how about networking to have classes meet online.... smoody [Guest] [to this group]: Maybe another topic could be hearing more about a specific project going on somewhere in the world. Frizzy nods. Frizzy [to this group]: Teachers could share their experiences using the Net in the classroom. smoody [Guest] [to this group]: can schMOOze have guest speakers (like in an auditorium)? thinking [to this group]: perhaps it might be good to share cross level ideas as well thinking [to this group]: we all teach in different types of places. Frizzy nods. Frizzy [to smoody [Guest]]: "Yes, I'm sure we could have a guest speaker." smoody [Guest] [to this group]: I would like to hear from people who have successful ideas thinking [to this group]: and unsuccessful ones as well...so we don't replicate the unsuccessful. Frizzy [to smoody [Guest]]: "You mean, someone who has 'tested' an idea and had success?" smoody [Guest] [to this group]: yes. Frizzy [to this group]: Sounds good. Mehitabel nods. smoody [Guest] [to this group]: like you! smoody [Guest] [to this group]: are there common problems we could address? Frizzy [to this group]: How about prep time for Net activities? I"ve found that they can be quite time-consuming. smoody [Guest] [to Frizzy]: "good idea! thinking [to this group]: perhaps tips could be given for reducing prep time Frizzy [to this group]: Perhaps Ts could share tips on shortcuts. Frizzy [to thinking]: "Jinx!" thinking smiles Frizzy [to Mehitabel]: "How about you? Any ideas?" Mehitabel [to this group]: Hold on. The phone just rang. thinking has received your emote. thinking [to this group]: ok so other ideas? smoody [Guest] [to this group]: how about dealing with students with little background in computers? Mehitabel [to this group]: But in general, a lot of prep time saves time and energy when the activity is acutally in progress. smoody [Guest] [to this group]: tips for introducing students to technology thinking nods Frizzy [to Mehitabel]: "good point. :)" Frizzy [to this group]: Also, who is responsible for teaching keyboarding? smoody [Guest] [to this group]: we teach it in our program because no one else does. Frizzy lumps that in as a subtopic within Ss w/little comp knowledge. smoody [Guest] [to this group]: that is a good topic, too. thinking lets students to decide to want it and then let's them work on their own with atyping program Mehitabel [to this group]: We have a program to teach it. Frizzy [to Mehitabel]: "Do you use Mavis Beacon?" Mehitabel [to this group]: Either that or Tying Tutor. Frizzy nods. smoody [Guest] [to this group]: we have a program (Type to Learn), but students are required to finish a certain number of lessons AND take a typing test. thinking [to this group]: or type it right or type it for me Mehitabel [to this group]: But I let them address their own typing needs. smoody [Guest] [to this group]: it's hard to know how much word-processing to teach. thinking [to this group]: my theory is as much as the student needs to do whatever he or she is doing. thinking [to this group]: it is the product that is important. Mehitabel goes along with that. smoody [Guest] [to this group]: maybe this is getting to another topic. . . . the difference between programs that have their own lab and programs that have to use labs with other students. Frizzy [to this group]: You can always point them in the direction of further exploration. thinking [to this group]: also there are classes that have one to five computers int hem Frizzy [to this group]: Also, how about schools that have classrooms w/computers, or only common labs? smoody [Guest] [to this group]: since we have our own lab, we offer workshops for word-processing and e-mail. thinking thinks classroom /lab configuration would be a good topic Frizzy nudges thinking. "I'm getting scared. We think a lot alike!" thinking [to this group]: everyone has different setups smoody [Guest] [to this group]: how about something on new high-tech stuff Mehitabel [to this group]: We don't have CD rom drives. smoody [Guest] [to this group]: i like to learn about new gadgets and programs Mehitabel [to this group]: All computers do have WEB and net access. Frizzy [to this group]: How about "appropriate use of Net tools"? thinking [to this group]: or appropriate use of CDROMS too? Frizzy [to this group]: Making do with what you do have while striving to improve access. smoody [Guest] [to this group]: do we have to be appropriately using the internet? thinking [to this group]: or appropriate use of software... Frizzy NODS. smoody [Guest] smiles Frizzy grins. thinking smiles at smoody Frizzy [to this group]: Not access, but . . . tools. Ugh. I hate jargon. smoody [Guest] [to this group]: Can you give an example? thinking [to this group]: an example of what? thinking lost the strand of that question. Frizzy [to this group]: Like, making the most of Lynx until you can get Netscape. thinking [to this group]: or using web whacker until you can get lynx or netscape Frizzy [to this group]: Exactly! smoody [Guest] [to this group]: I have questions about Netscape with frames. I think frames will change how we make web pages. thinking doesn't know what "frames" are Frizzy agrees, but not everyone has access to frames yet. In fact, very few. thinking [to this group]: perhaps that is a topic for a meeting too. smoody [Guest] [to this group]: Netscape 2 has frames. Mehitabel [to this group]: YEs, it is just a question of upgrading the Netscape version. thinking computer freezes with netscape 2. Perhaps need a memory upgrade? smoody [Guest] [to this group]: My comment about frames is more as a creator than a user. Frizzy nods to thinking. "Probably." Mehitabel [to this group]: No, it is not installed correctly. Frizzy [to smoody [Guest]]: "Yes, it will change the nature of how students can use Web pages interactively." thinking asks mehi for clarification smoody [Guest] [to this group]: another topic. . . has anything been said about newsgroups or listservs for students (and teachers) Mehitabel [to this group]: If Netscape worked before, Netscape 2.0 should work too. Gregor says, "Folks, we've been going for an hour here...I'm having fun, though. Shall we continue?" Frizzy [to Mehitabel]: "At CCSF, we've had a bit of trouble with 2.0 too." smoody [Guest] [to this group]: one of my classmates here at KU uses 2.0 a lot. It's unstable. Frizzy thinks we've covered a LOT of topics here. Gregor says, "or take a break and say goodbye to those who must go teach or make dinner or get to bed or....?" Frizzy [to this group]: Do you want to keep going? thinking notes the PC she uses has not had any problem with 2.0 smoody [Guest] [to this group]: Sure. thinking wonders if it could be a mac thing? Frizzy thinks perhaps it is. Frizzy [to thinking]: "Our Macs have been the culprits." thinking [to Frizzy]: sigh....but I still love them Frizzy speaks up, ""We're staying put for a while. :)"" smoody [Guest] [to this group]: are we supposed to be standing up or soemthing? Mehitabel [to this group]: Something needs to be configured. Frizzy [to thinking]: "Oh, of course!" Gregor sits down at Wading Pool. . . Frizzy splashes Gregor. smoody [Guest] [to this group]: Hi, Gregor. Gregor [to this group]: Hi, all. Gregor glubs. thinking continues looking at gregor thinking smiles Frizzy giggles. Gregor blushes and snickers at thinking. smoody [Guest] [to this group]: How big is this pool??? thinking [to smoody [Guest]]: big enough Frizzy grins. thinking [to this group]: we all like being cozy smoody [Guest] [to this group]: I can see knees and legs everywhere! Frizzy laughs out loud. Mehitabel [to this group]: With two Californians in it, it should be a hot tub. thinking snickers Frizzy cracks up! Frizzy [to Gregor]: "Can you change it?" thinking grins Gregor has received your emote. Gregor [to this group]: We were talking over there about the possibility of pursuing non-net CALL topics. Does that strike you folks as an appropriate use of our forum here? thinking wonders if mehi likes hot tubs smoody [Guest] [to this group]: Like what? Mehitabel [to this group]: I have never been in one. Gregor [to this group]: Yeah, you want bubbles, or heat, or both... ? thinking [to this group]: yes to me we should talk about technology in general. Frizzy wants it all. thinking [to this group]: we came up with lots of non net ideas. Mehitabel [to this group]: it's fine with me. thinking [to this group]: we were not holding ourselves to net stuff. Gregor [to this group]: Great, perfect. smoody [Guest] [to Gregor]: "We talked about preparation for net activities. So. . . how long did it take to prepare these meetings? thinking [to this group]: People think *I* am lopsided here at myjob so I want to get into non net stuff now. Frizzy [to thinking]: "The same thing is happening to me." thinking [to this group]: so it is time to find the finer side of CD Rom somehow... Gregor [to this group]: Well, it took longer last week. I built the room in about a couple hours, and I made the transparencies for the projctor in about the same amount of time. smoody [Guest] [to this group]: I was wondering about the transparencies. thinking notes gregor has an amazing artistic side in moo development. Mehitabel [to this group]: But it took Yoshi a while to program the projector. Mehitabel [to this group]: Gregor is the art director of schMOOze. He built the art gallery here. thinking yoshi a technical and mehi of course has both. smoody [Guest] [to this group]: I guess that I'm not too lopsided yet. I am learning a lot here. Frizzy [to this group]: and it took us about 2 hours to figure out the times for the MOO sessions, too! :P Gregor [to this group]: Yoshi invented the LCD panel, SMoo. It works really well, eh? thinking wonders if we use it today. smoody [Guest] [to this group]: very impressive. thinking [to this group]: I thought we just used the OHP.
