NETEACH Nook
------- ----
A spacious classroom with a comfortable, lived-in feeling to it. Someone
has put up at least one nice decoration: a world map with brightly colored
push pins showing where NETEACHers have connected from. So far, there are
pins in Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Australia, Greece, UK, Brazil, Israel,
Canada, France, Germany, and all over the US.
You see Teacher's Desk, Big Table, Bulletin Board, Beanbags, Fireside
Bearskin, Kitchen Table, Wading Pool, and Hot Tub.
You see Markus, Godzilla, Chrissy [Guest], Torachan, Mehitabel, and Corwin
standing about.
You see LCD Panel, Tea Pot, and Jo.
Obvious exits: out
Markus asked Jo, the PA of CMP, to take note of this meeting.
Corwin welcomes Jo "hiya"

Comments & Questions:
You can use the blackboard in this classroom to put down any thoughts,
remarks or questions now.
To add a line of text to the blackboard, anyone can type:
writeb [message]
For example: writeb Markus knows how to put up CGI scripts on a server
To see what has been written, type: LOOK BLACK (or L BLACK)
Go ahead and write your comments and questions on the blackboard now.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Godzilla says, "If you've had a chance to look at the site you probably
have questions?"
Chrissy [Guest] feels sorry as her machine can't catch the text running
speed.
Markus writes on the blackboard...
Chrissy [Guest] apologizes that she would be behind.
Gregor [to Markus]: Let me clean it off first.. it's a mess from a
previous session.
Gregor cleans the blackboard with a soapy sponge...
Markus [to crissy]: you can see the log of this session later...
Gregor [to Markus]: Can you rewrite what you put on the board?
Markus writes on the blackboard...
Torachan writes on the blackboard...

Gregor thwaps Corwin.
Corwin chuckles and ducks
Mehitabel writes on the blackboard...
Godzilla [to Gregor]: Hey! No thrwaping!
Markus says, "Ok... I am happy to see all the interesting Questions..."
Gregor desists from thwapping anymore.
Markus says, "I will try to answer most online, but maybe some later,
mailing you, is that ok?"
Mehitabel says, "FIne."
Corwin says, "yep"
Torachan nods
Gregor says, "Yup."
Godzilla says, "I might add that we can ALWAYS get into details on these
questions at another time."
Markus suggests to move on to the first point on our agenda for today,
but encourages all to write questions on the board as they come up during
the whole session
Godzilla says, "Many are good topics for a single session."
==================== BLACKBOARD ===========================
1) Please ask all kinds of questions that might come up during the
session, ok?
2) does javascript/javascript fit in?
3) Is CGI the same everywhere, or do different institutions have
different scripts available?
4) would you be willing to do a few lessons, in moo. to teach us to write
a basic script say... I need the jump start and I'm sure some others would
too?
5) Does one write one's own scripts, or access "official" scripts in an
institutional directory/collection?
6) What are some activities I can do with cgi on the net that are
impossible to do otherwise?
===========================================================
Markus is going to display something new on the screen...
On the screen you see...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is CGI (Common Gateway Interface)?
--------------------------------------
... CGI scripts are programs that are running on a web-server, processing
input users of a site send to the server from a page.
CGIs generate specific output events, according to the users input.
Those events can be:
- e-mail events (sending mail to you, the user or any other address)
- HTML-pages created on-the-fly by the server, including user data
- other events on the server (execute counters or any other command)
Simple examples are 'guestbooks', where users can easily create their own
messages on a page that is edited automatically and instantly by the CGI
script.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gregor [to Markus&Godzilla]: What would you like to focus on in this
session? We'll follow your lead.
Markus [to all]: we prepared 3 basic points: What are CGIs, Why are they
useful, and How can I start...
Godzilla says, "...so this is a general overview session..."
Markus says, "Do you have questions on transparency 4?"
Markus [to Chrissy [Guest]]: you can see it again typing PEEK 4 IN OHP
Godzilla says, "You might want to take some time right now and try the
"Order Coffee" form on the Webpage."
Mehitabel is drinking hers now.
Godzilla says, "This will give you a feeling for what cgi can do."
Gregor opted for Sangria instead. Had to go to another website for it.
Mehitabel adds that Markus helped her to do a cgi for a form for people
to request info about her school.
Gregor grins.
Corwin slurps up some hot black expresso "just the thing at 6am"
Godzilla says, "Please try the form a couple of times, changing the
information..."
Markus waits for questions on the Coffee order or on the basic definition
of CGI on slide No.4
Gregor [to Markus]: If I just copied and pasted the code from your page,
would my page suddenly have a form on it, or is there more to it than
that?
Godzilla says, "You'll see how the information is input is handled
differently if you choose different things."
Mehitabel [to Gregor]: You can't see the cgi code.
Godzilla [to Gregor]: That's the best way to learn how to make forms, yes.
Godzilla [to Gregor]: If you are learning html...
Corwin [to Gregor]: that's just the form
Markus [to gregor...]: this is one neat thing about CGIs people can copy
the form on the HTML but not the CGI script that processes it... their
stolen form wont do anything if you don't let them ;-)
Corwin says, "the script must be in a cgi-bin directory on their server"
Markus nods at Corwin and winks.
Mehitabel says, "Usually you must ask root to put it there."
Godzilla [to Gregor]: The form collects the data and sends it to the cgi
script.
Markus says, "I can of course let somebody use scripts on my server... "
Markus did this with Mehitabel and is puttting up scripts for Godzilla on
his server
Torachan says, "what if, like me one can't put a script on the server,
can I use your server remotely Markus?"
Mehitabel nods. Markus let me do that to test my form before I had the
cgi on my machine.
Torachan says, "wow!"
Markus [to Torachan]: you can use the script on my server if I don't
exclude this...
Corwin [to Torachan]: yep that's how alot of people put counters on their
pages
Markus nods at Corwin and winks.
Torachan says, "so THAT's how counters work!"
Markus says, "Counters are another very common CGI type..."
Gregor says, "So this:"
<---------------[Gregor slaps some spam on the screen]--------------->
Select flavor: <select NAME="product" SIZE=1>
<option>Cappuccino
<option SELECTED>Java
<option>Kenya Roast
<option>Latte
<option>Espresso
<option>Plain ol' coffee
</select>
<--------------------[Gregor wipes off his hands]-------------------->
Godzilla says, "Also, anytime you mailorder anything on the web you are
using a cgi."
Gregor says, "... is just HTML that accesses the CGI script elsewhere...?"
Mehitabel says, "65,000 + have visited the schmooze page."
Godzilla [to Gregor]: That is simply coding to provide people with
options from a popup box.
Markus says, "you can proceed with the next example now... the link
upload... jump to it clicking on 'submit site' on the support page's menu"
Markus corrects a typo: proceed
Godzilla [to Gregor]: the "product" and the option chosen (say Espresso)
are the two bits of data that get sent to the cgi.
Gregor nods to Godzilla. "I'm getting a better conceptual idea about this
now."
Godzilla [to Gregor]: So when you code, you change the name 'product' to
whatever bit of information you need to know.
Godzilla [to Gregor]: ...so 'product' can be 'bookordered' if run a small
bookstore on the web, for example.
Corwin [to Gregor]: the key bit in the html is...
Corwin says, "<form ACTION="http://halley.yadata.com.br/cgi-bin/coffee.pl"
METHOD="POST">"
Mehitabel has some questions when they talk abou the quiz.
Torachan says, "I only got 80% on the right answer quiz..."
Markus says, "This is what the coffee order does: it shows a page that is
composed on-the-fly according to user-input. Submit site is an example how
users can add to webpages instantly w/o need top know more than how to
open Netscape..."
Mehitabel says, "I told Markus that a New Yorker would get 0%."
Chrissy [Guest] amazes that all people here are really experts...
Torachan says, "I was born in New York!"
Corwin [to Chrissy [Guest]]: I can't write any code chrissy :-(
Mehitabel [to Chrissy [Guest]]: Markus tutored me before.
Markus says, "Ok... I see you already are trying the bleeding edge goodie
on the examples list..."
Mehitabel [to Torachan]: Ah! That's why. You did well for a New Yorker. :)
Torachan gives Mehitable a bronx rasberry!
Godzilla says, "No thwaping...and no raspberries!"
Markus says, "please try out another very important feature of CGIs:
tthey guide users safely thru a process, try to send data leaving fields
empty, ok?"
Dasha [to Markus]: Will I be able to get into this over the weekend?
Godzilla says, "The REALLY interesting script is, as Markus said, the one
on the bottom. Try it out with a good URL you know."
Corwin writes on the blackboard...
Torachan corrects a typo Mehitabel
Gregor thinks GOdzilla has suddenly turned into a boring monster. "No
stomping on buildings then, ya hear??"
Markus [to Dasha]: sure!
Godzilla stomps Gregor.
Godzilla [to Gregor]: Harumph.
Gregor grins.
Dasha is still using an ex-cash register.
Markus hugs Dasha with a warm and loving embrace.
Mehitabel loves Lesley's voice.
Markus says, "Please try to send on all examples deliberately missing
data out to see the feedback!"
Mehitabel nods.
Markus [to all]: yup the quiz (as the support site) is a result of CMP
---> Collaborative MOOers Project Lesley and I did it together, online!
Corwin [to Markus]: which form are you referring to? the long feedback
form at the bottom of the page?
Markus [to Corwin]: no I was referring to the coffee and basically to the
first pages of the quiz, when you select which one you wanna do...
Mehitabel says, "the cgi yelled at me because I forgot to put my name."
Corwin [to Markus]: thanks
Markus tries to answer some Qs from the blackboard:
==================== BLACKBOARD ===========================
1) Please ask all kinds of questions that might come up during the
session, ok?
2) does javascript/javascript fit in?
3) Is CGI the same everywhere, or do different institutions have

4) would you be willing to do a few lessons, in moo. to teach us to write

5) Does one write one's own scripts, or access "official" scripts in an

7) would you be willing to do a few lessons, in moo. to teach us to write a

8) Is a 'comment' any different from any other cgi field?
9) are the scripts on the webpage from net or you own? if the former, with or
without modification?
===========================================================
Gregor [to Mehitabel]: You're lucky.. the cgi THWAPPED me.
Godzilla [to Mehitabel]: Of course, you can have the cgi yell politely or
rudely.
Godzilla [to Gregor]: Thwpping and crushing are additional options.
Dasha smirks.
Dasha smirks.
Markus says, "well CGI interaction can be made almost fool-proof... if
you anticipate all steps and f/b them properly..."
Dasha says, "oops."
Godzilla says, "But you do need to think of every possible combination
that a user will input, including making mistakes in the input..."
Godzilla [to Mehitabel]: That's why it yelled at you.
Markus says, "Answer to Q no.9 and 5 from the board: there are prefab
scripts on the web that need very little configuring, and you should start
with those of course... but you can write all you wish to write... if you get
into it a bit more..."
Mehitabel quickly put in her name.
Corwin thinks a preview button (script) would be useful
Gregor has simple tastes. "I just want to put a suggestion box for topics
on the NETEACH MOO page, to start. I would think something like that would
be prefabbed somewhere already. Probably available from my U."
Markus says, "Answer to Q no.7: I could do several sessions to help
people mount concrete scripts... already did this online with Mehitabel and
you can see the log of this session at
http://halley.yadata.com.br/schMOOze/sessions"
Godzilla says, "We have links to some pre-scripted scripts on the page
there near the bottom. Under "Learning More about CGI"."
Gregor [to Godzilla]: Thanks.
Markus [to Corwin]: you are right! Preview is not that hard to do, but I
was really out of time lately... had to write a 50 page project proposal...
Mehitabel says, "or look at my form on:
www.hunter.cuny.edu/ieli/info.html"
Corwin [to Markus]: I'd really like to have you both help me and others
thru a couple of scripts to get our feet wet
Mehitabel says, "Mine isn't so fancy."
Godzilla [to Corwin]: My feet are getting wetter, but I'm finally
understanding the coding o f cgis a lot more.
Markus [to Corwin]: ok!
Corwin [to Markus]: re perview.. Imeant as a general butoon for a lot of
formss not just yours.. thinknig out loud for my own cgi
Godzilla says, "Feel free to talk about neteach. I'm here, but laggy."
Markus is going to display something new on the screen...
On the screen you see...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is it good for?
--------------------
... CGIs give you, as a site maintainer, the possibility to let your
users (learners/teachers) have controlled access to your server. All they
have to do is fill out forms or click buttons.
There are mainly three benefits in doing so:
(1) In spite of the time you use for setting up your CGI scripts, they
save you a lot of time later on, as you don't have to put/edit users'
materials manually on your server any longer. Users can put things on the web
alone, as much or as often as they like (or as server space allows).
(2) You can implement real and personalized interaction with your users
(3) User empowerment and autonomy: the CGI script can guide less
proficient internet users through complex processes.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Godzilla [to Corwin]: It's a matter of identifying the parts you need to
change and doing it. I think the learning curve is high, but not
impossible.
Markus says, "Summarizing what you saw in the examples..."
Corwin nods to godzilla "but thinks it ain't quite that simple"
Markus says, "(1) saving time is a must for me... I can't put user's
pages by hand on the web any more... I made an online HTML generator that
creates peoples pages based on templates w/o any help from my side..."
Ron is going to try to join you.
Ron has arrived.
Gregor greets Ron.
Corwin . o O ( scripts prolly can be written in different languages which
may be dependent on what' sitting on your server )
Ron waves at Gregor.
Torachan waves to Ron
Markus nods at Corwin and exclaims: "Exactly!".
Ron nods at Torachan and winks.
Corwin [to Ron]: hi!
Mehitabel says, "Hi, Ron."
Ron waves at Corwin.
Ron says, "Hi Mehi"
Dasha [to Rom]: Hi
Markus [to all]: You can of course play later with the scripts and try
out another important variant: sending e-mail, by using the feedback form...
Ron says, "Hello Dasha"
Hellas is going to try to join you.
Hellas has arrived.
Markus says, "Now how you can start..."
Markus is going to display something new on the screen...
On the screen you see...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
How can I start? (examples)
----------------------------
All you need is:
- a CGI processing program on the server (Perl, e.g.), FreeWare!!
- some collaboration of your sysop(s), or (partial) access to your
server.
- download some scripts (see URL below) and start to adapt them.
On the support page for this session you will find links to start with.
http://halley.yadata.com.br/schMOOze/neteach/
Please contribute to this site using the CGIs we setup there, you can
upload links and send us feedback on thie NETEACH session.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Godzilla says, "Hi Ron and Hellas!"
Gregor welcomes Hellas.
Godzilla says, "Markus says getting the sysops to agree is the tough
part."
Hellas gathers his stuff and heads out the door.
Ron says, "hi godzilla"
Markus [to all]: definitely...
Corwin writes on the blackboard...
==================== BLACKBOARD ===========================
1) Please ask all kinds of questions that might come up during the session,
ok?
2) does javascript/javascript fit in?
3) Is CGI the same everywhere, or do different institutions have different

4) would you be willing to do a few lessons, in moo. to teach us to write a

8) Is a 'comment' any different from any other cgi field?
9) are the scripts on the webpage from net or you own? if the former, with or
without modification?
10) if I don't know perl or C how do I know what to edit in a script i
download
11) how do I know which version of perl the script uses and which version is
the best to get on the server?
===========================================================
Torachan says, "I tried to get my syspos to help in Japanese and gave up
in frustration!"
Markus says, "as CGIs only execute on a server you have to be able to put
them there on your own as you might have to edit them 100 times till all
works fine"
Mehitabel bribes her sysop.
Gregor remembers the advice that chocolate always works on sysops.
Markus says, "if you have to ask a sysop everytime you changed a little
bit both will go nuts..."
Mehitabel says, "Mine put it on, but I own it."
Corwin writes on the blackboard...
Godzilla says, "I'm not sure when I'll be able to get cgi on a certain
server for a certain organization I do the html for."
Mehitabel says, "I didn't have to do any editing of the cgi, just the
form."
Godzilla says, "I've been begging and pleading for quite some time now."
Markus says, "there are 2 possibilites: you get root access to put them
in the main CGI-BIN directory"
Markus says, "this is very rare to happen..."
Gregor . o O ( not likely at a 30,000-student university! )
Markus says, "you have to be really proficient and have to know sysops
very well...."
Markus says, "but there is another possibility: the sysop can set up a
personal CGI-BIN for you... so normal user access to the server is enough"
Godzilla says, "As I'm almost a virtual htmler for the org I'm working
with, it's downright near impossible to put in the cgis. But I can prototype
on Markus' server."
Markus says, "this gives them a bit of work once ((if they never did so
and have to rtfm to get there), but will leave them in peace afterwards and
give you all you need!"
Corwin [to Markus]: a personal cgi-bin! how?
Gregor says, "They're really supporting innovative uses of tech for
teaching at my U, and I'm sure at most others as well. It's a good time to be
trying new things."
Corwin nods to G
Markus [to Corwin]: it is possible to tell the server that a determined
directory has the right to execute CGIs
Godzilla [to Gregor]: Lucky Lucky!
Corwin [to Gregor]: but our computer support unit for this has 4 people
and are innudated
Corwin [to Markus]: I'll ask about that later :-)
Gregor says, "I think it's time to get a big box of chocolates and head
for the Central Network Services office."
Markus is in the lucky situation to be sysop of almost 10 machines and
understands both sides....
Mehitabel [to Gregor]: TRy brownies.
Markus says, "a word on security:"
Gregor makes a note, nodding in thanks to Mehi.
Markus says, "CGIs are a potential security risk if they are not safe...
bc they execute commands on the server and can be abused to hack in tehre if
you are not preventing this..."
Markus says, "that's why sysops don't love them too much..."
Markus says, "otoh: no server is really safe!"
Corwin [to markus&godzilla]: what's th simplist script you've seen?
Gregor says, "Yikes. I bet they would prefer that newbies such as myself
use their official ones, in that case."
Markus says, "Passwords can be cracked by certain software in quite
reasonable time..."
Chrissy [Guest] feels that she should leave the building now as her
school is closing now. It is 00:00 in London now...
Mehitabel nods to Chrissy.
Gregor [to Chrissy [Guest]]: Good night, Chrissy! Thanks for coming!
Ron says, "The time in Richmond, Virginia, USA is now 7:01 p.m. on Friday"
Corwin waves to chrissy
Godzilla says, "Bye Chrissy, Thanks for coming."
Markus [to Chrissy [Guest]]: Bye! ...and try to read the session log
later!
Chrissy [Guest] waves to everyone : "Bye...
Torachan waves to Crissy
Dasha [to Chrissy [Guest]]: Bye!
Corwin [to Chrissy [Guest]]: bye!
Torachan can't spell at 8:00 am!
Mehitabel must return to RL now too.
Markus [to all]: ok... I am sure you all have loads of comments and
questions now... please use our f/b script to send them to us... ;-)
Corwin wavs to mehi
Godzilla says, "Bye Mehi."
Ron says, "Bye Mehi."
Markus says, "It was a real pleasure to work with you!"
Mehitabel thanks Markus and Godzilla.
Chrissy [Guest] leaves sadly as she can't wait for the closing of this
CGI meeting...
Corwin [to Mehitabel]: see you later
Mehitabel waves.
Chrissy [Guest] has disconnected.
A campus caretaker arrives, and escorts Chrissy [Guest] to bed.
Torachan says, "bye Mehi!"
Gregor thanks Markus and Godzilla once again for putting together an
informative session!
Markus is going to display something new on the screen...

Dasha [to Mehitabel]: Bye
Mehitabel goes home.
Gregor waves at Mehi
Gregor . o O ( too late... )
Dasha says, "this was better for me this time. Seeing it again is very
good reinforcement."
Markus will be on a bit more if you have Qs...
Shari [Guest] slides in, ready to NETwork.
Gregor claps and whistles loudly.
Markus bows
Gregor waves to Shari.
Ron waves at Shari [Guest].
Corwin says, "I was wondering...."
Markus says, "hmm?"
Dasha says, "Of course I have to wait till tomorrow or Sunday to use a
browser."
Corwin says, "if you folks have the time...."
Gregor says, "The time in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, USA is now
5:04 p.m. on Friday"
Gregor grins and ducks.
Markus says, "The time in Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil is now
8:04 p.m. on Friday"
Corwin says, "to paste in a simple script and disect it or maybe...."
Dasha [to Markus]: Thanks.
Ron better read the log and get up to speed on cgi's.
Godzilla says, "Thanks everyone for coming. I'm happy to answer questions
about cgi for those, like me, who are just starting to play witht he
coding."
Dasha [to Gregor]: I knew it!
Markus hugs Dasha with a warm and loving embrace.
Gregor giggles at Dasha.
Godzilla says, "I have to go back and get the family up and moving here!
See you all!"
Godzilla waves.
Corwin says, "arrange a time for people to do this later"
Markus says, "Bye Larry!"
Gregor says, "Bye, Godz! Have a good day!"
Torachan says, "see ya Lar! Thanks!"
Godzilla has slunk back into its den.
Godzilla has disconnected.
Dasha says, "bye Larry."
Ron says, "Thanks Markus and Godzilla."
